Zannone was full of snakes and you could not
stop for few minutes without seeing at least ten of them. These snakes
loved beautiful music. One day a king wanted to punish a fisherman that
enchanted his daughter with a beautiful song and sent him in exile to
Zannone telling him that he would agree for the marriage only if the
last would return back safe and sound after a period of exile. The
young man was going towards a certain death; the only hope to stay
alive laid in his ingeniousness that gave him the nickname of
"Sennone". Poor Sennone! He sat always on the seaside. For the moment
he had noticed that when he began a song , the reptiles rushed in a big
number towards him and stopped, dazed, at a certain distance from him;
but if he stopped the song they jumped at him and he found escape only
diving in the sea. He had a good idea: to begin to sing and not stop
until all the snakes of the island had come towards him. That's what
happened. When he was sure that all of them arrived, he dove in the
sea, and the snakes, in love with his song, followed him, drowning.
That is how from that moment on, Zannone had no more snakes and today,
thanks to Sennone who gave his name to the island, we can lie at the
shade of the trees.
