| Description: |
Also known
as "Grotte di Pilato" it belonged to a rich Roman Villa of which numerous remains
from the first century are still visible from the Promontory. Its name derives
from the the famous Pilato of Giudia. They became known as" baths of Pilato"
due to an old legend.
The complex can still be admired today for the perfection in its technique of
digging and cutting the rock even beneath the sea level.
The complex is made up of 5 baths, four covered and one in the open air, in
them there was the breeding and reproduction of fish, especially eels. For the
twofold use of haruspicy and culinary art.
In the main bath/pool five openings like shutters, guaranteed the change of
water and the trasffering of the fish to the other baths/pools. There was also,
a niche dug in the centre of the bottom of the wall, in the shape of an alter,
which contained small statues of marine deities and of good luck charms for
fishing.
It is best to visit it between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm when the light is at its
best. ( It is good to have an underwater torch).
